Figure AI’s flagship humanoid robot, Figure 02, carries a name that reflects its iterative pursuit of perfection. Unlike the evocative nod to space exploration in Apptronik’s Apollo, Figure 02’s name is pragmatic, signaling a second-generation design built on relentless refinement. Its sleek, metallic exterior and humanoid form exude a futuristic aesthetic, distinct from the softer, NASA-inspired white of Apollo or the industrial grit of other competitors like Tesla’s Optimus. Figure 02’s design prioritizes functionality and human-robot interaction, with a minimalist face featuring a digital display for expressive communication, making it approachable yet unmistakably advanced. A Vision Born in Silicon Valley
Figure AI was founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock, a serial entrepreneur with a track record of scaling tech ventures. After selling his previous companies, Archer Aviation and Vettery, for hundreds of millions, Adcock turned his sights to a grander challenge: building general-purpose humanoid robots to address global labor shortages. Based in Sunnyvale, California, Figure AI operates at the heart of Silicon Valley, a hub of innovation with proximity to tech giants like Google, Apple, and NVIDIA. The company’s headquarters, a modern facility equipped with advanced robotics labs, fosters rapid prototyping and testing, attracting top talent from across AI, robotics, and engineering disciplines. Adcock’s vision was shaped by the growing demand for automation in industries like manufacturing, logistics, and retail, where repetitive or dangerous tasks strain human workers. Rather than focusing on specialized robots, Figure AI aimed to create versatile humanoids capable of adapting to diverse environments, from warehouses to hospitals. This ambition drew early attention from investors and partners eager to back a company tackling such a transformative challenge.
A Rocky Start, A Resilient Climb
Figure AI’s journey has been a bold ascent through a competitive and capital-intensive robotics landscape. In its early days, the company faced skepticism from investors wary of the long timelines and technical hurdles associated with general-purpose humanoids. In 2022, AI and robotics were still grappling with limitations in real-world adaptability, with many investors favoring proven, single-purpose automation solutions. To gain traction, Figure AI leaned on Adcock’s entrepreneurial credibility and a lean, iterative approach, building prototypes to demonstrate feasibility.
By early 2023, Figure AI secured a $70 million Series A round led by Parkway Venture Capital, providing the runway to accelerate development of its first humanoid, Figure 01. The company adopted a pragmatic strategy, focusing on pilot programs with early adopters to validate its technology. Unlike Apptronik’s revenue-driven beginnings, Figure AI prioritized partnerships with tech giants and industrial leaders to refine its platform. A key milestone came in 2024, when Figure AI signed a collaboration agreement with OpenAI to integrate advanced AI models into its robots, enhancing their ability to understand and interact with complex environments. Figure 02: The Humanoid Redefined
Unveiled in August 2024, Figure 02 represents a leap forward from its predecessor, Figure 01. Standing 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 154 pounds, Figure 02 is designed to blend seamlessly into human workspaces. Its 50-pound payload capacity and six-hour battery life make it suited for demanding tasks, while its modular design allows for customizable configurations, such as interchangeable hands for precision or heavy lifting. Unlike Apollo’s swappable lower body, Figure 02 emphasizes upper-body dexterity, with advanced grippers capable of delicate manipulation. (PHOTO OF FIGURE 02 FULL BODY)
Figure 02’s capabilities are powered by a fusion of proprietary hardware and cutting-edge AI, including vision-language models developed in collaboration with OpenAI. These enable the robot to interpret natural language instructions, navigate unstructured environments, and perform tasks like picking and placing objects with human-like precision. Its commercial pilots, launched in 2024 with partners like BMW, showcase its potential in automotive manufacturing, where it handles repetitive assembly tasks and logistics support. Figure 02’s energy-efficient actuators and compact design give it an edge over bulkier competitors, allowing it to operate in tight spaces. Its target price, estimated at $80,000-$100,000, positions it as a premium yet accessible solution for industries seeking scalable automation.
A Landmark Funding Round
In February 2024, Figure AI raised a $675 million Series B round at a $2.6 billion valuation, one of the largest funding rounds in humanoid robotics. Led by Jeff Bezos’ Explore Investments, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Intel Capital, the round underscored Figure AI’s position as a frontrunner in the industry. The capital is fueling mass production of Figure 02, expansion of pilot programs, and growth of the company’s 120-person team, with plans to double headcount by mid-2026. Strategic partnerships have been central to Figure AI’s rise. The OpenAI collaboration, announced in 2024, integrates multimodal AI models, enabling Figure 02 to process visual and linguistic data for real-time decision-making. A partnership with NVIDIA leverages the company’s GPUs to accelerate AI training and onboard computation, ensuring Figure 02’s responsiveness in dynamic settings. Additionally, Figure AI’s agreement with BMW Group, formalized in January 2024, positions Figure 02 as a key component of BMW’s smart factory initiatives, with plans to deploy hundreds of units across global facilities by 2027.
The Road Ahead
Figure AI’s roadmap is laser-focused on scaling Figure 02’s commercial impact while pushing the boundaries of humanoid intelligence. In 2025, the company plans to expand pilot programs to new sectors, including logistics (with partners like Amazon) and healthcare, where Figure 02 could assist with patient transport or inventory management. Full-scale commercialization is targeted for late 2026, with a goal of deploying 10,000 units annually by 2028.
Like Apptronik, Figure AI is exploring a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model to lower adoption barriers, offering clients subscription-based access to Figure 02 with maintenance, software updates, and AI enhancements included. This approach aligns with Figure AI’s mission to make humanoid robots a ubiquitous part of the workforce, addressing labor shortages and enhancing productivity.
As Figure AI navigates the robotics revolution, Figure 02 stands poised to redefine human-machine collaboration, blending advanced AI with human-inspired design to create a future where robots work alongside us as trusted partners. (PHOTO OR VIDEO OF FIGURE 02 IN ACTION)
